Knowledge and Understanding

(Reviewing part 7 with some new insights)

1. We learned that when David fought against Goliath he drew near to him. (To defeat him)

2. Why could David draw near to Goliath? (His enemy)

3. Answer, because David was not afraid of Goliath. (His enemy)

4. Why, because David had knowledge and understanding of the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel.

1 Samuel 17:45
"Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." NKJV

5. As believers we need knowledge and understanding about the name of Jesus.

6. Goliath also drew near to David. (To defeat him)

7. Why could Goliath draw near to David?

8. Answer, because Goliath was not afraid of David.

9. Why, because Goliath had knowledge and understanding of what he believed.

10. Goliath had his gods.

11. We saw the picture in scripture

12. Not only in this account but in every battle we face.

1 Samuel 17:3
"The Philistines stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, with a valley between them." NKJV

13. Therefore we have the kingdom of darkness on one side and the Kingdom of God on the other side. (Light and Darkness)

14. Two insights.

15. First insight: The battle between David and Goliath was not fought on the mountain but rather in the valley. (David slew Goliath in the valley)

16. It is in the valley where the battles are fought and faith is tested. (Easy on the mountain top when everything is looking great)

1 Samuel 17:8
"Then he (Goliath) stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to them, "Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me." NKJV

17. We are to confront our enemy. (Face it like David did)

1 Samuel 17:19
"Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines."  NKJV

James 1:2-4 (For fun replace trials with valley)
Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, (Valleys) 3 for you know that the testing of your faith (in the valleys) produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. RSV

18. Second insight: In 1 Samuel 17:45, Goliath came against David with…

1 Samuel 17:45
"Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." NKJV

19. Therefore the enemy comes against us with?

20. Notice in 1 Samuel 17:45 three things came at once. (Sword, spear, and javelin)

21. Whatever the enemy comes against us with we are to know what to come against him with.

22. We are not to be ignorant of the enemy’s designs, wiles or intentions.

2 Corinthians 2:11 (Paul speaking)
"for we are not ignorant of his designs." RSV

2 Corinthians 2:11 (Paul speaking)
"for we are not ignorant of his wiles and intentions." AMP

23. We need knowledge and understanding of how the enemy operates.

24. They do this in sports. (They study their opponents team)

25. Remember knowledge and understanding keeps fear out and boldness in.

26. Recall David’s situation with Goliath.

27. David had knowledge and understanding about the name of the Lord of Hosts.

28. Therefore Goliath (his enemy) was defeated.

29. When the enemy comes against us with… we are to come in…

30. We are to come in the name that is above every name. (Jesus Christ)

31. We are to come with the word of God rightly divided spoken and applied in faith.

32. Rightly dividing God’s word takes study.

33. We need to be sure that our resources are accurate.

34. In other words Bibles with commentary and so on.

35. Realize that commentaries are not God’s word.

2 Timothy 2:15
"Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth." AMP

36. (Question) The enemy comes against us “with” …but what could the “with” consist of?

37. “With” could be:

* Doubt
* Fear
* Worry
* Dread
* A picture of defeat
* A picture of destruction

38. We need God’s word to know what we can come against the enemy with.

39. This is why we should read and study not just pray.

40. Prayer is important but we need to study to keep our prayers on track.

2 Corinthians 5:7
"(for we walk by faith, not by sight." RSV (“Sight” is one of the five physical senses)

Hosea 4:6
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" AMP

41. My distinction between reading and studying.

42. Gold mine.  Reading is when we gather surface gold. (Easy)

43. Study is when we get those gold nuggets. (Harder)

44. Consider this verse.

Ezra 7:10
"For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach his statutes and ordinances in Israel." RSV

Ezra 7:10
"For Ezra had prepared and set his heart to seek the Law of the Lord [to inquire for it and of it, to require and yearn for it], and to do and teach in Israel its statutes and its ordinances." AMP

45. I was using the principles in 1 Samuel 17:45 during the week.

1 Samuel 17:45
"Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." NKJV

John 8:44
"You are of your father, the devil, and it is your will to practice the lusts and gratify the desires [which are characteristic] of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a falsehood, he speaks what is natural to him, for he is a liar [himself] and the father of lies and of all that is false." AMP

46. Let me illustrate. (You come to me with… but I come to you in…

* Personal (Dread of evil)
* Spouse (What if?) (Doubt)
* Family member (But) (Doubt)
* Home (Now what?) (Doubt, fear and dread)
* Grandchildren (Are you sure?) (Doubt and fear again)
* Friends (They are?) (Gossip)
* Church (Can we?) (Junk)
* Job (What will I do now) (I might lose my job)
* World (What will happen?)

Philippians 3:20
"For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ" NKJV

1 Corinthians 11:23-25
"For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said,  "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me."  25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." NKJV

* Knowledge and Understanding needed for the baptism in the Holy Spirit with tongues!

47. When people lack knowledge and understanding especially in the subject of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues they are afraid.

48. They are afraid of what they see and hear.

49. Consider these verses from God’s word.

1 Samuel 17:8-11 (Verses 4-7 Physical description of Goliath-they saw him)
"Then he (Goliath) stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to them, "Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. 9 If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us." 10 And the Philistine said, "I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together."

11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid." NKJV

50. Insight: Realize that what we see and hear is magnified in the valley.

51. Who are we listening to?

52. I believe that people have made the subject of the BIHS with tongues a Goliath.

53. But it is not a Goliath.

54. It (BIHS with tongues) is not our enemy.

55. “BIHS” means “Baptism in the Holy Spirit”.

56. This subject (Blessing) is from our heavenly Father.

57. People are speaking words that are making people afraid of this subject.

58. People go to churches and see the misuse of the spirit filled believer.

59. Satan has painted a false picture of this subject that people believe which is contrary to God’s word.

60. One of the worst things a person can do is gather information from those who do not believe this area of God’s word. (Dip, skip, overlook)

61. Therefore we need the knowledge and understanding of this subject otherwise fear will hold people back from this weapon and tool of God.

62. Again this takes reading and studying God’s word.

63. Some of us might need bigger nuggets of understanding about this subject.
