Scatter the salt by Cheryl Palechek

This week, as we have dealt with the unexpected death of my stepdad, many people have said, “he was the salt of the earth”.  This got me wondering what they meant.

Wikipedia states, '"Salt of the earth" has become a common English expression, although the modern usage of the phrase is somewhat separate from its scriptural origins, and today it refers to someone who is humble and lacking pretension.'

That certainly fits my stepdad, but the phrase “separate from its scriptural origins” caught my attention and sent me on a search for God’s definition.

Salt was used for many things in the Bible:
It was required with all offerings. (Leviticus 2:13, Mark 9:49)
It was a covenant with God. (Numbers 18:19)
It was a way of purging lands conquered. (Judges 9:45)
It was used as a seasoning. (Job 6:6)
In Colossians 4:6 our speech is to be with grace, seasoned with salt.

How are we to be using salt in our lives?

In Colossians 4:6 our speech is to be with grace, seasoned with salt.

In Matthew 5:13 we are to be the “salt of the earth”.

What is our salt that will season, cleanse and preserve the world?
The gospel of Christ.  It cuts to the heart (Acts 2:36,37) and it is quick, powerful, and penetrating (Hebrews 4:12).

The world is an unsavory and wicked place. We have been blessed with a saltiness, which is the gospel of Christ that has the power to cleanse and preserve. Do the people we come in contact with long for a taste, of what our lives demonstrate? Can they see the Hope in us?

What about your life?

A simple prayer for your life:

Father, may my life scatter the saltiness of the gospel of Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen!

More Identity in Christ is the real thing! We are more than salt!

Come out of the salt shaker and into the world!
