Let us review the background for this reading.
Acts 2:14 we have Peter’s Pentecostal sermon.
Acts 2:37 we have the first gathering of souls.
We are discovering one special gift from God.
Acts 2:37-39
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" 38 And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him." RSV
Acts 2:38-39
38 And Peter replied, "Each one of you must turn from sin, return to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; then you also shall receive this gift, the Holy Spirit. 39 For Christ promised him to each one of you who has been called by the Lord our God, and to your children and even to those in distant lands!" Our Gift is the Holy Spirit.
Jesus could only be at one place at a time but now through the Holy Spirit, He can be everywhere at the same time.
Think about it. Jesus and everything (He is), is in us always everywhere we go.
Consider these verses about our freely given gift the Holy Spirit and what is available for mankind.
John 14:26-27
26 But the Counselor, (#3875) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. RSV
John 15:26
26 But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me; RSV
John 16:13-15
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. RSV
Holy Spirit:
Teacher. (John 14:26)
Spirit of Truth. (John 15:26)
Guide. (John 16:13)
He will declare the future. (John 16:13)
He will glorify Jesus. (John 16:14)
He will declare what belongs to Jesus to us. (John 16:14-15)
The Gift will help us bear much fruit.
Remember I said that God is glorified when we bear much fruit.
Just like a parent’s desire to see fruit in our children likewise with God.
Question. Why do we see Christians who have received the Gift of the Holy Spirit bearing little fruit or character?
In Jesus day He communicated with people, but He did it in a certain way.
I communicate in this way with the Andy Griffith show with my son John. (Examples in the teaching)
Jesus way of teaching helps us to understand Jesus the Rabbi and His rabbinic method of teaching. (Jesus was a Jew)
Understanding Jesus words will set us free. (Think about our words we speak to others, no understanding equals confusion.)
Jesus had a format to His teachings, and this helps us understand the words of Jesus.
Quoting from the Hebrew Scholar Roy Blizzard. Don’t miss this!
Statement. The most frequently used of the Haggadic method of interpretation by Jesus is called remez .
