(1) Let us begin another part of the series, “Lasting results”. (Session 2)
(2) This teaching reveals some research and insights about speaking in tongues.
(3) We will start with Acts 2:4 using different translations.
Acts 2:4 (KJV)
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, (#1100) as the Spirit gave them utterance. (#669)
Acts 2:4 (NKJV)
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
(4) There is a difference between the Greek definitions (Tongue #1100) and (Utterance #669) but both are generated by the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:4 (AMP)
And they were all filled (diffused throughout their souls) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages (tongues), as the Spirit kept giving them clear and loud expression [in each tongue in appropriate words].
Acts 2:4 (TLB)
And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in languages they didn’t know, for the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
(5) Think for a moment, they spoke in tongues and each person heard what was being said in their own language.
(6) One pastor friend of mine mentioned that this was the first “tongues and interpretation of tongues” in the New Testament Bible. (1 Corinthians 12:10, 14:1-33)
(7) In other words, the Holy Spirit gave the interpretation for each person in their own language of what was being spoken in tongues. This was supernatural.
(8) Here is the account. But first, notice what was said in verses 12 and 13.
Acts 2:12-13
12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "Whatever could this mean?" 13 Others mocking said, "They are full of new wine."
(9) They did not understand, “saying to one another, "Whatever could this mean?"
(10) Then others mocked and gave their own opinion or view. "They are full of new wine."
(11) Is it possible that this could be happening even today, in the body of Christ?
(12) The account.
Acts 2:1-13 (NKJV)
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.
6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.
7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?
8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?
9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God."
12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "Whatever could this mean?"
13 Others mocking said, "They are full of new wine."
(13) Some research.
Acts 2:4 (KJV)
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, (#1100) as the Spirit gave them utterance. (#669)
(14) Greek definition for the word, “Utterance”: NT: 669 a) pofqe/ggomai apophthéggomai; fut. apophthégxomai, from apó (575), from, and phthéggomai (5350), to utter. To utter, declare, speak, particularly pithy and remarkable sayings (Acts 2:4,14; 26:25; Sept.: 1 Chronicles 25:1; Ezekiel 13:9).
This is the verb used to indicate the discernable utterance of the "other tongues" in which the Holy Spirit enabled the believers to speak at Pentecost. Acts 2:4 says, "as the Spirit gave them utterance." The word "utterance" is the inf. apophthéggesthai, to form the sounds of the words.
They were the sounds of known dialects (Acts 2:6,8) understood by the people present. Therefore, the "other tongues" that the Holy Spirit enabled the believers to speak at Pentecost were meaningful words and not something which could not be understood.
They were not incoherent babblings resulting from a state of ecstasy, (X ta see) but they were deliberate, understandable words energized directly by the Holy Spirit.

(15) Realize that when we pray in tongues it is our spirit by the Holy Spirit that prays.
(16) It is not our mind that is praying. (Our mind is unproductive)
(17) Therefore, what can we do for our mind to be productive or fruitful while we pray in tongues?
(18) Examples of what we can do with our mind as we pray in tongues. (Productive)
(19) On a tread mill I can listen to music, mediate on written material, or read the Bible, and pray in tongues all at the same time.
(20) Now my mind is productive, and fruitful.
(21) Consider the following in view of what I just said.
1 Corinthians 14:14-15
14 For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue#1100, my spirit [by the Holy Spirit within me] prays, but my mind is unproductive [it bears no fruit and helps nobody].
15 Then what am I to do? I will pray with my spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me], but I will also pray [intelligently] with my mind and understanding; I will sing with my spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me], but I will sing [intelligently] with my mind and understanding also. AMP
(22) Research: Greek definition for, “in an unknown tongues”: NT: 1100 glw=ssa glossa (gloce-sah'); of uncertain affinity; the tongue; by implication, a language (specially, one naturally unacquired): KJV - tongue.

(23) Notice the two-character qualities needed for speaking in tongues.
(24) Decisiveness vs. Double-mindedness
“The ability to finalize difficult decisions based on the will and ways of God.” *(IBLP)
(25) A decision needs to be made.
1 Kings 18:21 (Full account is verses 20-40)
And Eli'jah came near to all the people, and said, "How long will you go limping with two different opinions? RSV
(26) Initiative vs. Unresponsiveness
“Recognizing and doing what needs to be done before I am asked to do it.” *(IBLP)
(27) We need to do what needs to be done and not wait for someone to tell us. Especially with the subject of speaking in tongues.
(28) Jesus already gave us His agenda!
Acts 1:4-5 (NKJV)
4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me;
5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."
(29) Jesus agenda was fulfilled in Acts 2:4.
Acts 2:4 (NKJV)
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
(30) Consider the following for our response.
James 1:22 (AMP)
But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth].
Acts 2:38-39 (NKJV)
38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."
Acts 19:2 (See also Acts 19:1-7.)
2 And he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"
(31) More insights.
(32) Praying in tongues is praying words of God.
(33) It is not just words but words that form prayers. (Not gibberish)
(34) Praying indicates some type of result. (Intimate Communication)
(35) At times we can even notice a change of words that are being prayed in tongues.
(36) When we pray in our known language, we are expecting some results otherwise why are we praying?
(37) When the Holy Spirit is praying through us, is He expecting some results?
(38) His work is not in vain.
(39) The Holy Spirit has an agenda when He gives us those supernatural un-acquired words. (Language)
